It’s early in the morning and you wake up by the music of Bob Marley. You’re still a bit dreamy but you hear some locals talking outside. You crawl out of bed, you grab a glass of water and you open up the creaking door of the bungalow. It’s only 7am but the sun is already shining on your face. Luckily some gusts of wind make it less worse. You stretch for a bit, you put down your glass of water and you lay down in the hammock on the porch. Time to wake up. Golf carts are passing by on the unpaved paths. The locals are saying hi. And the dogs on the streets are looking for a nice spot in the shadow. You are surrounded by hundreds of palm trees. And the ocean and the beach are right in front of you. You are watching the waves of the sea while you’re still listening to the music of Bob Marley. Welcome at Caye Caulker. Welcome to paradise. Welcome at one of the most relaxing places I’ve ever been to.
Caye Caulker is located on the east coast of the mainland. It’s nothing more than just a tiny island. But at the same time it’s everything. Right at the moment you set foot ashore you’ll become completely zen. Caye Caulker has that magnetic effect. It makes you feel relaxed. And it makes you fall in love so that you never want to leave this place. Let me tell you why.
Best motto in the world
The western people are used to be in a hurry and we don’t have patience at all. We want to do everything as fast as we can, so we can do as many things as we can. But at Caye Caulker the locals are doing the opposite. Completely. They never EVER will be in a hurry and they try do to everything as slow as they can. Even the motto is ‘Go slow’. And they’re taking that motto very seriously. The locals are sitting on a plastic chair all day long, just listening to music and talking to each other. They can’t drive cars, the only transport here are some golf carts and bikes. And both go slow either. The golf carts are not going faster than ten kilometres per hour and because of the many holes in the paths you have to go very slow. And I love it. I wish I could sit down all day and just do nothing and feel okay with that. Hallalujah!
Eat, drink, eat, drink
Lobster. Fresh fish. Barbecue. More lobsters. More fresh fish. And more barbecue. In combination with some cocktails, cold beers and the classic rum punch. De drinks are tasting fine, the food is even better. Go for the lobster season, around November. It’s a piece of heaven on your plate. Really!
Relaxing music all day long
I’ve already said it, but Bob Marley is one of the few music artists you hear at Caye Caulker. From 7am till late you hear his music everywhere. Sometimes they do listen to other artists, but most of the time it’s reggae music. Wanna hear something else? Then go to a bar in the evening and dance the night away. Because that’s what they do like pro’s!
One of the best snorkel and dive spots in the world
Are you tired of relaxing? Then go for more action and get into the ocean. Go on a snorkel tour, because here you find the second largest barrief reef in the world. And it’s absolutely beautiful. I’ve swum with a manatee, many rays, some big turtles, a lot of colorful fishes AND with a group of sharks. Best experience ever. This is not only one of the best snorkel spots in the, but it’s also in the list of top 10 dive sites in the world!
